Mooring & Wire Ropes

Top 3 techniques used with mooring ropes

Mooring is a procedure to tie the ship to a fixed or floating element and keep them together during loading or unloading operations. At WCI Maritime Services we are suppliers of mooring ropes and we know that a safe mooring must withstand various forces such as wind, current, tide or waves.

In this opportunity we are going to review the most common types of mooring, what they consist of and when it is advisable to use each one.

The one known as Ship to Ship transfer or transfer from ship to ship implies the parallel mooring of two ships for the transfer of cargo. During this operation, one of the ships may be at anchor or both may be on the move.

The procedure consists of the anchored or detained vessel being approached by another, at an angle as small as possible. During the approach, the maneuvering ship approaches looking for a parallel heading, reducing the distance until the fenders make contact.

Single Tie Point

This method of mooring consists of a buoy or floating dock outside the port to allow the handling of liquid or gaseous cargo from ships such as oil tankers. It is used in ports that do not have specific facilities for this type of large ship.

The boat is tied to the buoy with the help of one or two chains that are secured on board at the top of the bow. This mooring operation requires favorable weather, with little waves and wind.

When there is a strong wind in port and a ship has to be moored without the help of tugboats to a dock with little impact resistance, the Baltic Mooring is used. The captain or pilot uses the ship’s anchor and onboard cables to minimize such impact, mooring the ship so that it is berthed along the pier.
